I joined We Were Sharks (ex. Sharks!) in the summer of 2010 after attending a backyard party with some friends. I had initially purchased a midi Micro Korg keyboard to accompany some music I was recording. The band was new, I didn’t know much about the keyboard, but I still attended the first practice.
Fast forward to 2012, I ended up playing around 60 shows with the band from the east coast of Canada to western Ontario and everywhere in between. I had the opportunity to play at some notable venues like Babylon in Ottawa, Sneaky Dee’s in Toronto, The Pavilion in Halifax, and Underworld in Montreal. I opened for bands like The Wonder Years, Kid Liberty, and Like Pacific. We played two massive festivals; Montebello Rockfest and Vans Warped Tour in Toronto, something I had dreamed of doing growing up.
Things started to fall into place in my life at the beginning of 2012. I started a job with a salary, my company Decent Urban Rails (DU Lifestyle) started picking up, and the band started to gain traction, which led to it being more demanding.
After much contemplation, I decided to step down as the keyboard player and lead backup vocalist in the band. It was a tough decision and I was weighing my options, but I just couldn’t juggle the lifestyle that it came with at the time.
Being in the band was an invaluable experience for me. I always dreamed of performing on stage and touring in a van. It allowed me to make many connections and visit many cities I may have overlooked if I wasn’t touring. Not to mention seeing part of Canada some may never see. Spending two days a week at practice and 24 hours together on tour, the band mates past and present, kept things interesting. Many of these memories will never fade and I am eternally grateful for them.
